Long ago, Jekyll Island was only accessible via boat—usually a yacht owned by one of the wealthy Club Era patrons.
Here anchored the most luxurious pleasure craft in the world during the existence of the Jekyll Island Club, 1886-1942.
Other members entrained to Brunswick on their plush private railroad cars. There they were met at the train by the Club’s private launch, the Jekyll Island, under the command of James Agnew Clark. It ferried them across the wetlands to the Jekyll Island Club Wharf.

Today, you can still moor your yacht at the historic Jekyll Wharf situated directly in front of the Jekyll Island Club Resort. The Wharf offers deep-water moorings with easy access to the intra-coastal waterway. And the hotel offers door-to-door service to and from the resort.
It also features The Wharf, the island’s only waterfront restaurant located on the historic pier.

Moss Cottage was built in 1896. Typical of the early club cottages, its rustic appearance is a reflection of the casual lifestyle of the original club members, who sought to escape from the pressures of the city to hunt, fish, and enjoy the natural beauty of the coastal environment.
Downstairs are an entrance hall, a game room with wood shingle walls, a parlor, a dining room and servant’s area with a butler’s pantry and kitchen. Upstairs are five family bedrooms, two full baths, one-half bath, and a servant’s room. The attic floor contains seven rooms, probably used as servants’ quarters, storage, and one bathroom. The cottage, like many built during the Club Era, also has a basement. Originally, a solarium was located on the south side of the cottage.

Could this Wilson Plover be any cuter? Wilson Plovers are a shorebird commonly found on Jekyll Island, and they`re absolutely adorable! These little birds are about 7 inches long and have a distinctive black and white pattern on their feathers.
One of the best things about Wilson Plovers is that they nest right on the beach, which makes them easy to spot if you`re visiting Jekyll Island. However, this also means that they can be vulnerable to disturbances from humans and their pets, so it`s important to give them plenty of space and respect their habitat.
If you`re planning a trip to Jekyll Island, be sure to keep an eye out for these delightful little birds. And remember to do your part to protect their nesting sites so that future generations can enjoy them too!

Villa Marianna was constructed in 1928 for Club member Frank Miller Gould, a second-generation member. Architect Mogens Tvede used a blend of Spanish Eclectic and Italian Renaissance in the style of this cottage.
Another mansion-turned-rental venue is Villa Marianna. It was built in 1928 for Frank Miller Gould, who was lucky enough to be a second-generation member of the esteemed Jekyll Island Club. The mansion was designed for Gould by Mogens Tvede, whose use of Spanish Eclectic and Italian Renaissance elements gave the cottage an exotic flair. Gould named it for his daughter, Marianne. One of the first buildings renovated, it once housed the offices of the Jekyll Island Authority.

Diamondback terrapin nesting season is in full swing on Jekyll Island’s Causeway, often leading terrapins to cross the road in search of better nesting sites.
Since 2007, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center has worked to quantify and mitigate terrapin road mortality by monitoring, treating injured terrapins, and marking and releasing uninjured ones to assess population trends.

#DidYouKnow—Henry Kirk Porter, a locomotive manufacturer and United States Senator, built Mistletoe Cottage in 1900. It was designed by Charles Alling Gifford as a Dutch Colonial Revival, with elements of both shingle style and classical style.
John Chaffin leased the home from Porter`s estate in 1924 and two years later bought it. At his death was the last living character member of the Club.
In more recent years, preservation staff consulted with specialists from the Northeast Document and Conservation Center to rehabilitate the cottage’s sunroom to its Jekyll Island Club-Era appearance. Efforts included:
—conducting a historic paint analysis to return the walls of the sunroom to their original blue paint color
—reproducing the hand-painted ceiling treatment featuring images of birds and leaves in brilliant colors
—framing the original Chinese silk wallpaper for display in the cottage

#DidYouKnow - Goodyear Cottage was built in 1906 for the lumber baron, Frank Henry Goodyear of Buffalo, New York. There are seven rooms and a half-bath on the first floor and five bedrooms and three baths on the second floor. The third floor originally contained a servant’s room, a bath, and a storage area.
The house was restored in 1974 and is now used as a center for the creative arts, housing the Jekyll Island Arts Association and the Jekyll Island Pottery Guild. Exhibits by both local and visiting artists are on display monthly.

Jekyll Island Historic District, a National Historic Landmark administered by the state of Georgia, is situated on the southeast side of Jekyll Island. It`s a 240-acre site with 34 historic structures and one of the largest ongoing restoration projects in the southeastern United States, attracting curious guests from around the world.
Originally occupied by the Guale Indians who called the area Ospo, the island was a popular hunting and fishing site. Gen. James Edward Oglethorpe, founder of Georgia, maintained an outpost on the island, and a plantation was established by one of his officers, Maj. William Horton. In 1794 a French family, the du Bignons, bought the island. They retained possession until 1886 when the island was sold to the newly formed Jekyll Island Club.
It soon became recognized as “the richest, most inaccessible club in the world.” Club members included such notable figures as J.P. Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer, William K. Vanderbilt, and Marshall Field.
Members prized the island for its “sense of splendid isolation,” beautiful landscape, and moderate climate. Jekyll Island, with its cottage colony and clubhouse, was viewed as a little paradise, where members and guests pursued “a life of elegant leisure.”
From 1967-1968, Savannah landscape architect Clermont Huger Lee created a master development plan with the goal to restore the area known as “Millionaire’s Village” to its 1910-1929 era. Though not fully implemented, Lee’s plans served as a foundation in the redevelopment of today’s Jekyll Island Historic District.
Jekyll Island Club Historic District was added to the NRHP on January 20, 1972, and was designated a National Historic Landmark District on June 2, 1978.
