Jekyll Island is often described as one of Georgia`s "truly premier birding destinations" and not to be missed when birding the coast of Georgia.

Birds like the Great Blue Heron pictured—the largest heron in North America—migrates toward warmer temperate regions, so you are likely to find many on the island.

Help advance bird conversation efforts and keep Jekyll Island a haven for birds by donating today at the link in our bio.

The Skeet House was originally built in the 1930s for recreational use by the Jekyll Island Club. Skeet shooting was a popular activity at the island resort, which first formed in 1886 as a hunting club.

Thanks to recent fundraising assistance by the Jekyll Island Foundation, the building recently became the focus of preservation efforts by the Mosaic, Jekyll Island Museum. It was taken apart piece by piece and reassembled in its current location along Pier Road.

In its new home in the heart of the historic district, the Skeet House now provides a centralized activity space for educational programs and entertainment within the historic district.

Ongoing historic preservation efforts in Jekyll’s Historic District are made possible through visitation to the Mosaic, Jekyll Island Museum and through donations to the Jekyll Island Foundation.

In 2016, as part of our ongoing journey, the Jekyll Island Foundation enabled the Georgia Sea Turtle Center (GSTC) to acquire new flexible endoscope equipment. This technology enhances our ability to care for sea turtles, offering minimally invasive diagnostics and treatments that significantly advance our conservation efforts.

This step forward reflects our commitment to combining innovation with compassion in wildlife conservation. As we mark 25 years of dedication, your support is vital in sustaining our mission to heal and protect marine life.

#DidYouKnow—Henry Kirk Porter, a locomotive manufacturer and United States Senator, built Mistletoe Cottage in 1900. It was designed by Charles Alling Gifford as a Dutch Colonial Revival, with elements of both shingle style and classical style.

John Chaffin leased the home from Porter`s estate in 1924 and two years later bought it. At his death was the last living character member of the Club.

In more recent years, preservation staff consulted with specialists from the Northeast Document and Conservation Center to rehabilitate the cottage’s sunroom to its Jekyll Island Club-Era appearance. Efforts included:

—conducting a historic paint analysis to return the walls of the sunroom to their original blue paint color
—reproducing the hand-painted ceiling treatment featuring images of birds and leaves in brilliant colors
—framing the original Chinese silk wallpaper for display in the cottage

Ongoing historic preservation efforts in Jekyll’s Historic District are made possible through visitation to the Mosaic, Jekyll Island Museum and through donations to the Jekyll Island Foundation.

Have you visited Faith Chapel yet? Constructed in 1904 for the members of the Jekyll Island Club, Faith Chapel has welcomed visitors for more than a hundred years. From the heart pine flooring to the copper tip of the steeple, the combined elements immerse guests into Faith Chapel’s Club-Era past.

The furnishings in Faith Chapel complement the gothic-revival architecture, with their simple forms and trefoil cutouts recalling the technique of Medieval craftsman and the decoration of European Gothic cathedrals.

The Jekyll Island Foundation—in conjunction with the @jekyll_island Authority and @jekyllfriends (FOHJI)—remains committed to the preservation of the island’s historic resources. Future efforts are planned to ensure Faith Chapel is preserved for generations to come.

Ongoing historic preservation efforts in Jekyll’s Historic District are made possible through visitation to the Mosaic, Jekyll Island Museum and through donations to the Jekyll Island Foundation.

In 2009, as part of our journey, the Jekyll Island Foundation enhanced our wildlife rescue efforts with the acquisition of our first wildlife transport/utility terrain vehicle for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center (GSTC). This milestone, reflecting our commitment to conservation, significantly improved our response to wildlife in need across Jekyll Island`s diverse terrains.

As we celebrate 25 years of stewardship, we`re inspired by the progress we`ve made and the impact of your support. These vehicles symbolize our dedication to the island`s natural inhabitants and our promise to continue protecting them.

Long before the present-day causeway was built, the only way to reach Jekyll Island was by boat. ⛵ Today, from airboat tours to dolphin tours, Jekyll Island has plenty of ways to see and experience the waters and wildlife that surround the island.
